This is an interesting explanation and illustration of viruses and how they reproduce.

Not a real rosewood tele but near enough for most people

OK, but I would be surprised if that sort if thing could be kept quiet
over here. The feds can (and do) hide all sorts of things, but at the
local level? Not a chance. Too many busy-bodies, poking their noses
where they don't belong (or so some might think).

It's an interesting point from the other side, though.

In the case of the Clipper race, each boat is sponsored by a town or a
region. I rather suspect that they may be paying wildly different
amounts. (but probably around a million each). A condition of their
contract with Clipper is that the amount of the sponsorship is
confidential between Clipper and the Sponsor. (Presumably so that
Qindao don't get on the phone to Clipper saying "we demand a refund,
we are paying 2 million and a spare boat, whereas Yorkshire are paying
three packets of teabags and a Geoff Boycott autograph! It's not fair!
And you stole Tea from us in the first place!"

We find this attitude over here. Even among folks who oughta know
better. When Kitty worked for city planning in Madison, her boss tried
this on. She (and the rest of the staff) would have none of it.

A former professor of mine called me and a former classmate in to
speak to his city planning seminar about confidentiality in planning
offices. We both (independently, as it happens) came down hard on him
and the notion that there was or ought to be confidentiality. We took
an absolutist position on our versh of the Freedom of Information Act,
arguing that the public's business belonged to them who pay for it
(the taxpayers, natch), and there was no way anything could be covered
up. If a developer couldn't stand the light of day shining on his/her
project, then they should keep it to themselves.

Neither of us were ever invited back to speak, and were occasionally
given the Hairy Eyeball on the street by said professor. So I didn't
go to his retirement party. That'll show 'im!
